AI Is Like a Temp Assistant (And That’s Okay)

Posted on 2 Mar at 11:10 pm
  • What I noticed: The same prompt that worked perfectly for months suddenly produced slightly different formatting and structure.

  • What I learned: AI models evolve constantly, and small behavioral shifts are normal.

  • How you can apply it: Monitor outputs, refine prompts when needed, and treat AI like a team member who occasionally needs recalibration.

If you’ve used AI long enough, you’ve probably seen this happen.

You build a great workflow. You have a solid blog prompt: 600 words, include headings, add a bullet list, format it cleanly. It works beautifully for months.

Then one day… the headings aren’t formatted the same. Or instead of proper bullet points, you get odd symbols. Or the tone shifts slightly.

Nothing dramatic. Just different.

This doesn’t mean something is broken. It means AI systems are evolving under the hood. Models get updated. Behaviors get tuned. Formatting preferences shift. The assistant you’re working with today isn’t exactly the same one you worked with three months ago.

I sometimes describe it like hiring from a temp agency. You still get someone capable. They can write the sales letter, draft the blog, outline the strategy. But there may be small differences in style or approach. You don’t panic. You onboard them.

That’s how we should treat AI.

Especially if you’re using a custom GPT, a Claude Project, or a Gemini Gem, you’ll get more consistency. But even then, it’s wise to review outputs with intention.

Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Keep your core prompts saved and versioned.

  2. If behavior shifts, adjust the prompt slightly rather than starting from scratch.

  3. Periodically re-test key workflows to make sure formatting and tone still meet your standards.

  4. Stay observant, not reactive.

The pace of change is accelerating. Model updates are happening more frequently than they used to. That’s a good thing overall, but it does mean you need to stay engaged.

I always say: lead with your heart, finish with your brain. In this case, finishing with your brain means reviewing the output before you publish it. Make sure it still reflects your standards.

This matters because AI is not a static tool. It’s a living system that evolves. The business owners who treat it like an active team member — one that occasionally needs direction and refinement — will get far better results than those who assume it runs on autopilot.
